Comment: In the short run, probably not. But if these attacks continue for months with no
significant signs of progress, anti-American sentiments throughout the world will almost surely
intensify.
|
Comment: Once again, our respondents seem to have little faith in the government's actions to
combat terrorism. While the attacks on Afghanistan may disrupt al Qaeda's ability to plan and train
for new acts of terrorism at least temporarily, we must adopt much different methods to significantly
damage the group's capabilities.

Comment: It looks like the government has a way to go before passengers feel truly safe about
flying again. However, it seems like our first priority should be to tighten security when terrorists
try to get into the country making it less likely they would have the opportunity to conduct their acts.
|
Comment: Our respondents seemed to be tortured by this question as voting remained evenly divided
until the final few days of voting. This is indeed a complicated issue balancing the need for safety against
cost and effectiveness. Unfortunately, the federal government hasn't done a terribly good job enforcing
border security or immigration, so the real question is could they do any better than the system we have
now?

Comment: While arming pilots at first glance appears to be an excellent idea, there are many
potential complications that need to be considered. For example, who has access to these weapons when
the plane is on the ground between flights? How do we ensure that they do not fall into the hands of
terrorists or passengers? What if a suicidal or homicidal pilot decides to use his weapon on himself or
others? What sort of weapon is appropriate (gun, stun gun, etc.)?
|
Comment: Although it could be a matter of perspective, it looks like we did indeed get the
full-scale air war. While opinion seemed to be running slightly against such an action before the strikes
began, the tide soon turned and ended up quite in favor of the attacks after they began.
