The other day, I visited the USS Lexington, CV-16. I have been wondering what the V stood for. I found the answer on a site stating that "'V' indicates fixed wing (vice rotating wings as on helicopters)." I understand the fixed wing part, but what do they mean by vice rotating wings?

My friend is trying to convince me that Japan used submarines to attack Pearl Harbor, but we all know it was planes from aircraft carriers, right? What can you tell me about the attack? Is my friend totally nuts?
